Through a selective process, 100 Kentuckians per grade are accepted. Students are selected from all walks of life, from rural and urban corners of Kentucky (over 25% Appalachian). In a fully-residential environment on Western Kentucky University's (WKU) campus, students complete high school enrolled in early college classes in lieu of traditional 11th\/12th grade years. The Academy endeavors to provide advanced students with demonstrated STEM interests a rigorous environment to pursue their learning through college classes, mentored research, and among motivated peers. The model has been recognized by the Washington Post, Newsweek, Intel, the Daily Beast, and others since its 2007 opening.\r\n\r\nOur STEM + Critical Language program was imagined in 2012. Through the first Mandarin Chinese track, students had the opportunity to take an increasingly-rigorous, collegiate-level Chinese course each of their four semesters at The Gatton Academy through WKU's Modern Languages department or Chinese Flagship with optional study abroad. Besides their language study, the cohort took the program's demanding STEM curriculum and performed mentored STEM research too. Upon immediate success, the school created STEM + Critical Language tracks in Arabic (2013) and Russian (2017).\r\n\r\nThe goal of STEM + Critical Languages is simple. STEM professionals are needed to fulfill high-need areas. So too are critical language learners! Students equipped with both skill sets are readied to fulfill an incredible niche to tackle issues of national security and to promote international economic development opportunities.\r\n\r\nTo date, 77 students have graduated from the tracks (44 Chinese, 21 Arabic, 12 Russian). Another 56 are currently enrolled in the 2020-21 academic year (22 Chinese, 22 Russian, 12 Arabic).\r\n\r\nOur STEM + Critical Language tracks are replicable for any high school that has a collegiate partner with critical language These include faculty-led study abroads, sponsored travel opportunities, and national scholarships like the Natoinal Security Language Initiative for Youth. \r\n\r\nOur STEM + Arabic program receives occasional support from the Qatar Foundation. Our Gatton Academy Honors Arabic Debate Team was sponsored to travel to Doha, Qatar for an international debate tournament which gave four students the opportunity to practice their language skills in an Arabic-speaking country with an international audience. The Qatar Foundation is sponsoring a travel-based program for Gatton Academy students (planned for 2020 and then deferred to 2021 due to the pandemic). Ten STEM + Arabic students have studied abroad through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarship since the STEM + Arabic program's 2013.\r\n\r\nOur STEM + Chinese students have studied abroad through our own faculty-led programs in Beijing and Tianjin, China and in Taiwan (occasional), through the CET summer programs, and occasional Confucius Institute-sponsored programs (relationship discontinued in 2019). Fifteen STEM + Chinese students have studied abroad through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarships since the STEM + Chinese program's creation in 2012.\r\n\r\nOur STEM + Russian students have studied abroad through our own faculty-led program in Georgia (launched as an every-other-year program in January 2020). As Kentucky's premier secondary school destination, The Gatton Academy strives to help every student we enroll study abroad before graduating high school. For the majority of our students, any occasion studying abroad is a first time out of the USA.\r\nWe offer a $1,000 scholarship to all students to support their first study abroad program. Low-income families apply for our Gatton Need-Based Study Abroad Scholarship, completed supported through private funds, that makes additional partial or full scholarship funding possible.\r\nOur school's faculty-led study abroad programs are guided by language instructors. The students use the language by meeting with business leaders in China, especially between companies that work jointly in the USA and China. The WKU Study Abroad office has been a great ally in providing assistance and allowing our students to participate within their channels. Getting parental signatures on all documents is a challenge since our students come to The Gatton Academy from various corners of Kentucky and few parents are in town. They learn benefits and possibilities ahead in studying a critical language. Students opt-in through a short application to their choice language, justifying interest and listing foreign language history. Of the approximate total 100 students the school admits annually, each of the language programs draw small cohorts of committed students. An average cohort is eight students per language track. Therefore, around 25% of total Gatton Academy students enroll in a STEM + Critical Language track.\r\nThe students start at our residential program in 11th grade, living in a specially-designated residence hall on campus at Western Kentucky University. Each of their four semesters of 11th and 12th grades, the STEM + Critical Language students enroll in a progressively more-rigorous university language course sitting alongside traditional college students. Students receive continuous language instruction through this arrangement. By the time the student graduates high school, they have completed at least four levels of collegiate learning in their chosen critical language. In rare cases when a student has prior history of instruction in that language, course placement exams are administered and the student is placed to be appropriately challenged from the first semester. \r\nStudents can choose to accelerate their learning through occasional study abroad offerings or by enrolling in a summer language institute.\r\nStudents are further supported through regular STEM + Talks. The Gatton Academy is an 11th and 12th grade program. Therefore, students from across the state arrive with various histories of prior language study. \r\nIn approach one, the school ensure that every graduate accomplishes state proficiency (two sequence courses in the same foreign language). Our broad student population may choose to sequence in any of the languages WKU offers. \r\nOur second approach is targeted, deliberate, and intensive. It involves students in less-commonly taught critical languages (Arabic, Chinese, and Russian). The Gatton Academy built our STEM + Critical Languages program around three languages because 1.) these are U.S. Department of State-identified critical languages, and 2) while there are many other identified critical languages, WKU regularly offers Arabic, Chinese, and Russian courses each semester and with deep curricular offerings of at least four language levels on a standard, rotational basis. The Gatton Academy and WKU ensure that year-in-and-year-out, we are ready to challenge new cohorts of language learners by concentrating on these languages.\r\nThe STEM + Critical Language program is structured around the goal of preparing students in two critical-need areas simultaneously. Students in the three cohorts take the same exemplar STEM curriculum that has made The Gatton Academy a national model. Our workforce continues to demand talented, well-prepared STEM professionals. Likewise, and by definition, the nation has a high need for individuals with identified languages. First, our partner WKU Modern Languages offers a full major in Mandarin Chinese, offering Gatton students a deep curricular well from which to draw. Even heritage Chinese speakers, who are unable to read or write in Mandarin, have enrolled in our STEM + Chinese program and found appropriate placement to challenge their language acquisition needs. Second, WKU is home to one of only 13 Chinese Flagships offered through the National Security Education Program. Gatton students may take Chinese Flagship courses in this grant-funded program, featuring an accelerated option, with language learning five days a week and intensive, individualized tutoring. \r\nThe STEM + Arabic program is partnered with WKU Modern Languages offering a full major in Arabic. Gatton Academy students take introductory language-intensive courses, though the department offers advanced courses in three career funnels: Arabic for International Service, Arabic for Journalism, and Arabic for International Business. Gatton STEM + Arabic students who persist at WKU for undergraduate pursuit can choose to refine their Arabic study into one of these curricula.\r\nSTEM + Russian is our newest program. Russian is a developing program with our partner WKU, but we sprung upon the opportunity to add this track as soon as four levels of Russian were offered annually.\r\nStudents in all three language tracks also participate in our regular STEM + Talks. Talks are held three times each semester and range from seminar style topics on current opportunities like the National Security Language Initiative for Youth to future opportunities like the Critical Language Scholarship, Boren Fellowship, and more. Because of the other curricular STEM requirements at The Gatton Academy, these offerings have not been feasible for Gatton Academy students. The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky is an 11th/12th grade publicly-funded program. Through a selective process, 100 Kentuckians per grade are accepted. Students are selected from all walks of life, from rural and urban corners of Kentucky (over 25% Appalachian). In a fully-residential environment on Western Kentucky University's (WKU) campus, students complete high school enrolled in early college classes in lieu of traditional 11th/12th grade years. The Academy endeavors to provide advanced students with demonstrated STEM interests a rigorous environment to pursue their learning through college classes, mentored research, and among motivated peers. The model has been recognized by the Washington Post, Newsweek, Intel, the Daily Beast, and others since its 2007 opening.

Our STEM + Critical Language program was imagined in 2012. Through the first Mandarin Chinese track, students had the opportunity to take an increasingly-rigorous, collegiate-level Chinese course each of their four semesters at The Gatton Academy through WKU's Modern Languages department or Chinese Flagship with optional study abroad. Besides their language study, the cohort took the program's demanding STEM curriculum and performed mentored STEM research too. Upon immediate success, the school created STEM + Critical Language tracks in Arabic (2013) and Russian (2017).

The goal of STEM + Critical Languages is simple. STEM professionals are needed to fulfill high-need areas. So too are critical language learners! Students equipped with both skill sets are readied to fulfill an incredible niche to tackle issues of national security and to promote international economic development opportunities.

To date, 77 students have graduated from the tracks (44 Chinese, 21 Arabic, 12 Russian). Another 56 are currently enrolled in the 2020-21 academic year (22 Chinese, 22 Russian, 12 Arabic).

Our STEM + Critical Language tracks are replicable for any high school that has a collegiate partner with critical language offerings.

Improve access to language learning for all learners in more languages

Upon admission to The Gatton Academy at the conclusion of 10th grade, students are informed how our STEM + Critical Language tracks (Arabic, Chinese, and Russian) function. They learn benefits and possibilities ahead in studying a critical language. Students opt-in through a short application to their choice language, justifying interest and listing foreign language history. Of the approximate total 100 students the school admits annually, each of the language programs draw small cohorts of committed students. An average cohort is eight students per language track. Therefore, around 25% of total Gatton Academy students enroll in a STEM + Critical Language track.
The students start at our residential program in 11th grade, living in a specially-designated residence hall on campus at Western Kentucky University. Each of their four semesters of 11th and 12th grades, the STEM + Critical Language students enroll in a progressively more-rigorous university language course sitting alongside traditional college students. Students receive continuous language instruction through this arrangement. By the time the student graduates high school, they have completed at least four levels of collegiate learning in their chosen critical language. In rare cases when a student has prior history of instruction in that language, course placement exams are administered and the student is placed to be appropriately challenged from the first semester.
Students can choose to accelerate their learning through occasional study abroad offerings or by enrolling in a summer language institute.
Students are further supported through regular STEM + Talks. The goals of Talks are 1.) to establish a strong community between the language cohorts in our school, 2.) to introduce participants to additional opportunities (i.e., language scholarships, programs, and career tracks), 3.) and to better round learning with immersive cultural experiences (i.e., attending a Russian ballet, cooking a traditional meal together).

The Gatton Academy’s foreign language program is offered under a two-fold approach: ensure every student has foreign language learning vs. deliberate, intensive critical language cohorts in three languages.
As a residential high school on campus at Western Kentucky University, Gatton students can take several foreign languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. The Gatton Academy is an 11th and 12th grade program. Therefore, students from across the state arrive with various histories of prior language study.
In approach one, the school ensure that every graduate accomplishes state proficiency (two sequence courses in the same foreign language). Our broad student population may choose to sequence in any of the languages WKU offers.
Our second approach is targeted, deliberate, and intensive. It involves students in less-commonly taught critical languages (Arabic, Chinese, and Russian). The Gatton Academy built our STEM + Critical Languages program around three languages because 1.) these are U.S. Department of State-identified critical languages, and 2) while there are many other identified critical languages, WKU regularly offers Arabic, Chinese, and Russian courses each semester and with deep curricular offerings of at least four language levels on a standard, rotational basis. The Gatton Academy and WKU ensure that year-in-and-year-out, we are ready to challenge new cohorts of language learners by concentrating on these languages.
The STEM + Critical Language program is structured around the goal of preparing students in two critical-need areas simultaneously. Students in the three cohorts take the same exemplar STEM curriculum that has made The Gatton Academy a national model. Our workforce continues to demand talented, well-prepared STEM professionals. Likewise, and by definition, the nation has a high need for individuals with identified languages. The STEM + Critical Language program seeks to prepare a special, niche individual with foreign language and STEM skills.

Increase language learning effectiveness to meet all learner needs

The STEM + Chinese offering at The Gatton Academy gives students the most flexibility with two options. First, our partner WKU Modern Languages offers a full major in Mandarin Chinese, offering Gatton students a deep curricular well from which to draw. Even heritage Chinese speakers, who are unable to read or write in Mandarin, have enrolled in our STEM + Chinese program and found appropriate placement to challenge their language acquisition needs. Second, WKU is home to one of only 13 Chinese Flagships offered through the National Security Education Program. Gatton students may take Chinese Flagship courses in this grant-funded program, featuring an accelerated option, with language learning five days a week and intensive, individualized tutoring.
The STEM + Arabic program is partnered with WKU Modern Languages offering a full major in Arabic. Gatton Academy students take introductory language-intensive courses, though the department offers advanced courses in three career funnels: Arabic for International Service, Arabic for Journalism, and Arabic for International Business. Gatton STEM + Arabic students who persist at WKU for undergraduate pursuit can choose to refine their Arabic study into one of these curricula.
STEM + Russian is our newest program. Russian is a developing program with our partner WKU, but we sprung upon the opportunity to add this track as soon as four levels of Russian were offered annually.
Students in all three language tracks also participate in our regular STEM + Talks. Talks are held three times each semester and range from seminar style topics on current opportunities like the National Security Language Initiative for Youth to future opportunities like the Critical Language Scholarship, Boren Fellowship, and more. Some Talks are language specific and involve students in cultural activities ranging from a Chinese taekwondo lesson to an Arabic cooking class to attending a Russian ballet.

Advancing students' language learning and opportunities to gain intercultural experiences.

The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) (hands down) has been the most incredible, unexpected outcome of our STEM + Critical Languages program. We are proud that 46 of our students have received NSLI-Y summer and yearlong scholarships over the last 10 years. These experiences have been unanimously wonderful for our students.

The Gatton Academy / Western Kentucky University partnership is the core of our school's model. Bridging language learning into this model has been a natural outgrowth, and focusing on critical languages has accelerated these smaller language programs at the university by providing a regular infusion of students year-to-year. Meanwhile, for The Gatton Academy, the university's offering of Arabic, Chinese, and Russian have allowed The Gatton Academy to create a language learning curriculum focused on deliberate and intensive critical language study that few high schools have implemented.

Students imagine ways to link their classroom study to overseas study even before graduating high school.

Our track record with students applying to and receiving NSLI-Y has become a recruitment tool for our STEM + Critical Languages tracks. Students can see immediate possibilities for overseas immersion study even during their two years at Gatton.

The relationship between The Gatton Academy's STEM + Critical Languages tracks and WKU is symbiotic. The Gatton Academy benefits by having deep curricular offerings that few high schools can rival. We have a well-developed university language department with incredible offerings and expert faculty to teach our students. The STEM + Critical Languages programs at The Gatton Academy provide WKU with a regular enrollment of bright, highly-motivated students.

Our students age (not yet being 18) is occasionally a hiccup.

As popularity of the NSLI-Y programs grew with Gatton Academy students, we have had to designate additional staff resources (seasonally) to assist students through the application process.

Western Kentucky University has offered bi-term language courses so collegiate students could accelerate language learning and take two language courses within a single semester. Because of the other curricular STEM requirements at The Gatton Academy, these offerings have not been feasible for Gatton Academy students. This has been a dimension that the university has revisited with The Gatton Academy several times, but we have not had room to bend without compromising on our STEM curriculum.

Our STEM + Arabic program has partnered with the Qatar Foundation. Our Gatton Academy Arabic Honors Debate Team has formed and practices regularly. They have competed domestically and in Qatar, fully funded by the Qatar Foundation.
The Qatar Foundation has also funded The Gatton Academy for an immersion program in Qatar (postponed currently because of the pandemic).

The relationship with the Qatar Foundation is paving the way for more students to have overseas and language immersion experiences. These opportunities have fueled students' intense preparations for debate tournaments, pushing their language acquisition to new levels.

Expand opportunities for overseas immersion and study abroad programs

Most of our students study abroad to support their language learning through one of several strategies. These include faculty-led study abroads, sponsored travel opportunities, and national scholarships like the Natoinal Security Language Initiative for Youth.

Our STEM + Arabic program receives occasional support from the Qatar Foundation. Our Gatton Academy Honors Arabic Debate Team was sponsored to travel to Doha, Qatar for an international debate tournament which gave four students the opportunity to practice their language skills in an Arabic-speaking country with an international audience. The Qatar Foundation is sponsoring a travel-based program for Gatton Academy students (planned for 2020 and then deferred to 2021 due to the pandemic). Ten STEM + Arabic students have studied abroad through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarship since the STEM + Arabic program's 2013.

Our STEM + Chinese students have studied abroad through our own faculty-led programs in Beijing and Tianjin, China and in Taiwan (occasional), through the CET summer programs, and occasional Confucius Institute-sponsored programs (relationship discontinued in 2019). Fifteen STEM + Chinese students have studied abroad through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarships since the STEM + Chinese program's creation in 2012.

Our STEM + Russian students have studied abroad through our own faculty-led program in Georgia (launched as an every-other-year program in January 2020). Nine STEM + Russian students have studied abroad through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarships since the STEM + Russian program's creation in 2017.

Kentucky has one of the lowest passport ownership rates in the nation. As Kentucky's premier secondary school destination, The Gatton Academy strives to help every student we enroll study abroad before graduating high school. For the majority of our students, any occasion studying abroad is a first time out of the USA.
We offer a $1,000 scholarship to all students to support their first study abroad program. Low-income families apply for our Gatton Need-Based Study Abroad Scholarship, completed supported through private funds, that makes additional partial or full scholarship funding possible.
Our school's faculty-led study abroad programs are guided by language instructors. The students use the language by meeting with business leaders in China, especially between companies that work jointly in the USA and China. Our goal is to expose students to ways to enhance collaboration for economic development opportunities globally.

It's an extremely time consuming process planning a program for minors, accounting for all safety and risk issues within reason. The WKU Study Abroad office has been a great ally in providing assistance and allowing our students to participate within their channels. Getting parental signatures on all documents is a challenge since our students come to The Gatton Academy from various corners of Kentucky and few parents are in town. We have encountered issues getting visas approved in time for students without US citizenship.

Students are meeting virtually for conversation groups around the world on assigned topics through their courses. Our Arabic students are practicing on our Honors Gatton Academy Arabic Debate team. Students are involved in our local Arabic, Chinese, and Russian student group clubs. Students have done cooking classes synchronously from their home kitchens, with their instructor leading them through recipes to make their family a traditional dinner.
